Working on Saturday is fun...

Fun being a relative term of course. This is much more fun for example than a root canal. I've never had a root canal but just from hearing the accounts of others I believe that I can safely come to the conclusion that I would rather be working right now on this cold Saturday morning than experiencing a root canal or the after effects thereof.

Other things that are not as fun as this? Ummm... I think this is more fun that the time I awoke in the middle of the night unable to breath because due to some really bad acid reflux, I had actually inhaled some stuff that decided to check out what it would be like to exit my stomach through the esophagus. That was definitely NOT as much fun as this... and since I totally freaked my wife out I think she'd agree on my behalf.

Oh yeah! There was the time a while ago when I got out of bed to discover my back didn't like me standing up and I was forced to the ground by excruciating back spasms and I then stayed in bed for the next 4 days. This is SOOOOOOO much more fun than that.

So as you can see I am completely enjoying myself in a very relative sense.

OK so I am just trying to write an entertaining blog. I get 1.5 x overtime so really I have nothing to complain about whatsoever... except for the fact that I'm not really having any fun.

Hey now... I spent 2 hours and 27 minutes on a phone call with a gentleman from India which afforded me some time to jot down some thoughts... so BACK OFF!!!

I'd like to apologize for that outburst... It just so happens that I am as I type once again on the phone with another Symantec tech support representative and while his ethnic origin is also India, it really should not cause me consternation. Language barriers admitedly can frustrate me at times.

Ha, yes the Bombay tech support. I have great respect for our Indian homeys...I love a good curry, I have gone through very serious Indian classical music phases (I'm still a huge Ravi Shankar fan), my quasi-Britishness makes me very interested in cricket (something they have more interest in than the average Brit), and compared to the communism of China and the radical Islam of the Arabs, they are one of the friendliest Asian countries to us in the West.

But an accent could be grating after 30 minutes, much less 2 1/2 hours. If the person on the line had a mild southeast Kansas twang after that much time, it would be driving me nuts.

And to justify what must be seen as goof-offery on the part of IT workers everywhere that do non-work-related things online during work hours...remember, we are like firemen. You'll see firemen playing basketball, sitting in chairs, and generally goofing off outside of the fire stations sometimes. But when they get a call, they are ready. So it is with IT, often...sometimes dull periods, sometimes a flurry of activity.

Besides, we control the firewalls. MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
